Annapurna Circuit Trek Overview
Since it first welcomed international trekkers in 1977, the Annapurna Circuit Trek has garnered global acclaim as one of the planet’s most breathtaking trekking routes. It traverses verdant valleys and captivating villages, offering awe-inspiring vistas of the snow-capped Himalayas.
Commencing from an altitude of under 1,000 meters, this three-week adventure unfolds from Syange along the Marshyangdi River, where views of Manaslu and Himal Chuli unfold to the east. The journey showcases a rich tapestry of cultures, with diverse ethnic groups inhabiting picturesque villages against a backdrop of majestic Himalayan peaks. The scenery transitions dramatically from the lush north slopes to the stark, high-altitude Tibetan Plateau.
The pinnacle of the Annapurna Circuit is the Thorong La Pass, towering at 5,416 meters. Typically traversed counter-clockwise due to the challenging ascent and descent, this route leads through dramatic landscapes and diverse terrain. Descending westward from the pass, the trail reveals the arid, Tibetan-like village of Muktinath and the awe-inspiring Kali Gandaki Gorge — the deepest gorge in the world nestled between the colossal Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs.
In recent years, the construction of roads has impacted parts of the Annapurna Circuit, altering some traditional trekking routes. However, our itinerary now takes a more adventurous path via Upper Pisang and Ngawal, using natural trails to reach Manang. To access Jomsom from Muktinath, we traverse the scenic Lubra Pass, offering a unique and less-traveled route. While some sections, like Jomsom to Tatopani, necessitate brief travel by private vehicle due to busy roads, we ensure your experience remains authentic and unforgettable.

How fit do I need to be to do this trek?
To embark on the Annapurna Circuit trek, participants should ideally be in good physical condition, capable of enduring long hours of hiking over varied terrain and adapting to changes in altitude. The trek spans diverse landscapes and reaches altitudes over 5,000 meters at Thorong La Pass, demanding stamina and endurance. While prior trekking experience is beneficial, it’s not mandatory, as the route is well-marked and supported by teahouses along the way. However, preparing with cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and altitude acclimatization exercises beforehand can significantly enhance comfort and enjoyment during the trek.
How long do we walk every day when doing the Annapurna Circuit trek?
During the Annapurna Circuit trek, the daily walking durations vary depending on the specific segment of the trek and individual pace. On average, trekkers typically walk anywhere from 5 to 7 hours per day. Some days may involve shorter walks of around 3 to 4 hours, especially during acclimatization days, while others might require longer stretches, such as the ascent to Thorong La Pass. It’s important to note that the pace and duration can be influenced by factors like weather conditions, trail difficulty, and personal fitness levels.
What is the highest altitude reached in this trek?
The highest altitude reached during the Annapurna Circuit trek is Thorong La Pass, which stands at an elevation of 5,416 meters (17,769 feet) above sea level. This pass is a significant milestone and one of the highlights of the trek, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.
Is it necessary to hire guides/trekking agency for Annapurna Circuit trekking?
While it’s not essential to hire a guide or trekking agency for the Annapurna Circuit, there are compelling reasons why many trekkers opt to do so:
Enhanced Safety and Expertise: Guides bring invaluable knowledge of the terrain, weather conditions, and potential hazards. Their expertise ensures a safer journey and allows you to navigate confidently through varying landscapes.
Insight into Local Culture: Trekking with a guide enriches your experience with cultural insights and stories about the region. You’ll learn about the flora, fauna, and traditions of the diverse communities along the trail.
Convenience and Logistics: Trekking agencies handle all logistical aspects such as permits, accommodations, meals, and transportation. This streamlined approach lets you focus entirely on soaking in the breathtaking scenery and enjoying the trek.
Support in Emergencies: Guides are trained to respond to emergencies like altitude sickness or injuries promptly. Their presence provides reassurance and ensures swift assistance if any unexpected situations arise.
Shared Adventure: Joining a guided trek offers camaraderie and the opportunity to share the journey with like-minded adventurers. It adds a social dimension to your trekking experience, making memories and forging friendships along the way.
Whether you’re a seasoned trekker or new to hiking in the Himalayas, trekking with a guide or agency can elevate your Annapurna Circuit adventure, making it not just a trek, but a truly immersive and unforgettable expedition.
What kind of weather and temperature can I expect while trekking?
During your trek in the Annapurna Circuit, you’ll experience diverse weather conditions and temperatures depending on the altitude and time of year:
Spring (March to May): Spring brings mild temperatures and blooming rhododendrons. Daytime temperatures range from 10°C to 25°C (50°F to 77°F) in lower altitudes, while higher up, temperatures range from 0°C to 15°C (32°F to 59°F). Nights can be chilly, especially at higher elevations.
Summer (June to August): This is the monsoon season with heavy rainfall, particularly in July and August. Daytime temperatures can range from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F) in lower regions, but higher altitudes may experience frequent cloud cover and rain.
Autumn (September to November): Autumn is the peak trekking season with stable weather and clear skies. Daytime temperatures range from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F) at lower altitudes and can drop to below freezing at higher elevations. This season offers the best views of the mountains.
Winter (December to February): Winter brings cold temperatures and occasional snowfall, especially above 3,000 meters. Daytime temperatures in lower regions range from 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F), but nights can be bitterly cold, dropping well below freezing.
It’s essential to pack layers that can be easily added or removed based on the weather conditions. Even during the best seasons, weather can be unpredictable in the Himalayas, so being prepared for a range of temperatures and conditions is advisable.
Is it possible to use credit cards in the places I visit during the trek?
Nepalese Rupees cash is preferred to a credit card while trekking in the mountain region. Exchanging your cash into Nepali Rupees in Kathmandu before the beginning of the trek is ideal. This can be accomplished at the airport, at banks, or at your hotel. Please note the hotels will exchange up to about USD 100 for each transaction only. There are ATMs up to Namche Bazaar but can be unreliable. The currency exchange rate is better in Kathmandu.
Are your guides certified by the hotel management and tourism center? Have they undergone specific training for high-altitude conditions?
We offer licensed trekking guides fluent in English. Our guides are certified by the Hotel Management and Tourism Center following a 45-day training program. Additionally, they receive high-altitude training from the Kathmandu Environmental Education Project (KEEP).
