Bardia National Park, located on the eastern banks of the Karnali River, approximately 400 km west of Kathmandu, spans 968 sq km from the Churia hills to the gentle slopes of the Bhabhar. The park’s higher elevations feature dry deciduous forests dominated by the hardwood sal tree, while the western end is interspersed with numerous waterways of the Karnali River, creating a mosaic of large and small gravel islands.
The park is a haven for a diverse array of wildlife, many of which thrive in the lush Phantas grasslands, such as Baghora and Lamkoili—ideal spots for animal sightings. The most prominent resident is the spotted deer, but you’ll also encounter black bucks, hog deer, sambar deer, wild boars, and the rare barasingha or swamp deer. Two species of monkeys, the langur and the rhesus macaque, add to the vibrant wildlife.
Bardia National Park is renowned for its elusive herds of wild elephants and boasts a small population of rare gharials, marsh mugger crocodiles, and Gangetic dolphins. The islands of the Karnali River are home to the subcontinent’s largest antelope species, the nilgai or blue bull. The Karnali and Babai rivers attract numerous wintering waterfowl and resident species like herons, kingfishers, and wall creepers. With over 350 bird species recorded, Bardia is truly a bird watcher’s paradise.
