Discover the Untamed Beauty of Bardia National Park
Bardia National Park, once the exclusive hunting reserve for Nepal’s Rana rulers from 1846 to 1950, has a rich history and an even richer biodiversity. After the end of Rana rule in the 1950s, the park lost its royal protection, and a well-intentioned malaria eradication program in the 1950s and 1960s opened up the Terai region for settlement. This transformation converted about 75% of the native Terai into agricultural land, leading to a decline in wildlife populations due to increased settlement and widespread poaching. However, in 1976, Bardia was designated as a wildlife reserve, initially spanning 134 square miles (347 km²). By 1985, it had expanded to 374 square miles (968 km²) and achieved national park status in 1988. The approximately 1,500 residents of the Babai Valley were relocated, allowing natural vegetation to regenerate and creating a prime habitat for wildlife.
