Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek Highlights

Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek Overview

The Dhaulagiri Circuit is a demanding trek through rugged alpine pastures, challenging high passes, and serene, uninhabited valleys. Standing tall at 8,167 meters, Dhaulagiri is the 7th highest mountain globally, known as the “white mountain” despite numerous mountains bearing similar names worldwide. Located in western Nepal, Dhaulagiri offers some of the most remote and adventurous trekking opportunities in the country, boasting over fifteen peaks exceeding 7,000 meters and a landscape of dramatic contrasts.

The trek begins with an exhilarating 8-hour drive from Kathmandu to Beni, where the journey heads northwest through villages like Babichour, Dorbang, and Darapani towards Muri. Muri, the last major settlement along the trail, is inhabited by the Magar tribe, descended from early settlers of the Nepalese middle hills. Continuing north along the banks of the Myagdi Khola, the trek passes through villages such as Baghara, Dobang, and Chartare before reaching Pakoban.

Beyond Pakoban, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged and uninhabited as the trail skirts the Chhanbardan Glacier, leading to Dhaulagiri Base Camp with its awe-inspiring mountain views. From here, the route heads northeast to conquer the steep French Pass (5,360 m) nestled between Tukche Peak (6,920 m) and Sita Chuchura (6,611 m). Descending eastwards through the Hidden Valley, trekkers climb up to Thapa Pass (5,250 m) before descending further south-east towards Alubari.

The trail then descends to Marpha, a village on the banks of the Kali Gandaki River, and continues north to Jomsom for a flight back to Pokhara. For those with extra time, the trek can extend further southwards to Kalopani, Tatopani, Ghorepani, and finally into Pokhara, providing an extended exploration of the diverse landscapes and cultures of the region.
