Gokyo-Chola Pass with Everest Base Camp Trek Overview
The start of this trek mirrors the iconic journey to Everest Base Camp. We begin our adventure by descending to Everest Base Camp, making a memorable stop for two nights in the bustling village of Namche Bazaar to acclimatize. Known as the commercial hub of the Khumbu region, Namche Bazaar is a vibrant crossroads where traders journey from as far as Tibet to sell their goods every Saturday. This amphitheater-like town is where all trails converge, creating a lively mix of people and animals vying for space. Stunning mountain views are enhanced by visits to Sherpa villages, homes, and monasteries, providing a deep dive into the culturally rich and serene Sherpa lifestyle on the rugged steppes of the Himalayas.
The Gokyo-Chola Pass with Everest Base Camp trek kicks off with a breathtaking scenic flight to Lukla, followed by a trek downhill to the Dudh Koshi River, passing through charming local villages until we reach Namche Bazaar. Our journey continues along the trail through Machhermo to the enchanting Gokyo Valley, climbing to Gokyo Ri, crossing the thrilling Chola Pass, and trekking to Everest Base Camp. We then ascend to the highest vantage point at Kala Patthar for an awe-inspiring view of peaks and glaciers, including the majestic Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Lhotse, and Mt. Pumori. Our descent takes us through Pheriche to Tyangboche, and after conquering Everest Base Camp, we trek back down to Lukla for our return flight to Kathmandu.

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu
Upon arrival at the airport, you will receive a warm welcome from a Real Journey Nepal staff member who will escort you to your Kathmandu host family or hotel. Embrace Nepalese hospitality as you settle into your accommodations, complete with your own room and meals provided. This peaceful and secure suburb serves as your home base for orientation and volunteering in Nepal, conveniently connected to town and surrounding countryside by easy bus routes. Day 2: Kathmandu – Sightseeing and Trek Preparation
Explore the enchanting Durbar Square, the sacred Pashupatinath Temple, the iconic Swayambhunath Stupa, and the magnificent Bouddhanath Stupa, all UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Marvel at the ancient royal history, immerse in Hindu spirituality, and experience the serenity of the stupas. In the afternoon, meet your fellow adventurers and discuss our exciting journey ahead at the Real Journey Nepal office. Overnight in Kathmandu. Meals: Bed and Breakfast.
Day 3: Flight to Lukla (2,800m) Trek to Phakding (2610m) 3-4 hours trek
Kickstart your day with an early morning transfer to the domestic airport for an exhilarating 40-minute flight to Lukla (2,800m), the gateway to our trek. Surrounded by towering peaks, this flight route is one of the most thrilling in the world. Upon arrival, enjoy a refreshing tea while our guide organizes the load baggage for the porters. Our trek commences through the picturesque Sherpa village, crossing several tributary streams, and offers mesmerizing views before reaching Phakding (2650m). Warm up with a short hike to a nearby monastery or explore the area to acclimatize. Overnight at Lodge (B, L, D)
Day 4: Trek Phakding – Namche Bazaar (3440m) 5-6 hours trek
The trail from Phakding leads us through lush forests of rhododendron, giant fir, and magnolia trees along the Dudh Koshi River, crossing high suspension bridges to reach Monjo, the entrance to Sagarmatha National Park. This park was established to protect and preserve the fragile mountain environment. We then ascend steeply to Namche, catching our first glimpse of Mt. Everest, weather permitting. Enjoy views of Mt. Kusum Kangaru, Mt. Thamserku, Mt. Kongde-Ri, and Mt. Tawache peak. Visit village monasteries en route to Namche Bazaar, a thriving trading town and the capital of the Khumbu Region (3440m). Overnight at Lodge (B, L, D)
Day 5: Rest & acclimatization at Namche Bazaar
Acclimatization is crucial before trekking higher. Namche Bazaar, the central hub of the Everest region, offers government offices, ATMs, Internet cafes, shops, a bakery, and local markets. Spend the day acclimatizing and exploring, with options to hike to Khunde hospital, established by Sir Edmund Hillary, or take a one-hour walk to Syangboche (3800m) for spectacular views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Thamserku, and Mt. Kusum Kangaru. Overnight in the bustling Namche Bazaar. (B, L, D)
Day 6: Trek Namche Bazaar – Dole (4,110m) 5-6 hours trek
Climbing steeply out of Namche Bazaar, we reach Kyangjuma Village for stunning views of Thamserku, Katenga, and Ama Dablam. The day’s toughest ascent is to Mong La, a charming spot with a historic Chorten at its center. Enjoy lunch with grand views of snow-capped mountains and valleys. The trail today abounds with plant and animal life, including wildflowers and rhododendrons. Spotting pheasants, mountain goats, and musk deer is common. Through forests, waterfalls, and bridges, we reach Dole, a small settlement with a few teahouses. Overnight at Lodge (B, L, D)
Day 7: Trek Dole – Machhermo (4410m) 4-5 hours trek
From Dole, we climb steadily along the valley, with thorny bushes giving way to scrub juniper as we ascend. The trail passes many summer settlements, offering excellent views of Cho Oyu, Kantega, and Thamserku. Arrive at Machhermo in time for lunch. This is the last major settlement en route to Gokyo. Visit the Himalayan Rescue Hospital for a lecture on altitude sickness, its prevention, and treatment. Overnight at Lodge (B, L, D)
Day 8: Trek Machhermo – Gokyo (4750m) 5-6 hours trek
Today, we head towards the wonder lakes of Gokyo. Follow a scenic trail to Pangkha, then descend slightly to a melting-water river from the west side of the Ngozumpa Glacier. Climb a steep rocky path into the valley, passing the first of the holy lakes. Soon, arrive at the second lake, crossing the path to Cho La (5420m). The third lake, Dudh Pokhari, is home to the settlement of Gokyo, set against the backdrop of Cho-Oyu Mountain. Explore around the third lake after lunch. Overnight at Lodge (B, L, D)
Day 9: Rest day at Gokyo Valley; explore the Gokyo valley Rest and explore the Gokyo Valley.
If weather permits, climb Gokyo Ri for a panoramic view of the Everest Region. Gokyo is famed for its stunning views from Gokyo Peak and its six lakes. See the northern part of Cho-Oyu base camp and the world’s largest glacier, Ngozumpa Glacier. Gokyo is a trade center where Sherpas run lodges. Overnight at Lodge (B, L, D)
Day 10: Trek/climb Gokyo – Gokyo RI (5340m) – Thaknak (4650m) 6-7 hours trek
Gokyo RI, the highlight of this trek, offers an unforgettable view of Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu. Climb early morning to witness this breathtaking panorama. Descend to Gokyo, have breakfast, and trek to Thaknak, passing the second lake and the Ngozumpa Glacier. Overnight at Lodge (B, L, D)
Day 11: Trek Thaknak – Cho-la Pass (5,367m) – Lobuche (4,950m) 6-7 hours trek
Today is one of the toughest days, starting early to cross the Cho-la Pass, often covered in blue ice. The pass is steep and involves a glacier traverse. Climb through a ravine, pass a frozen lake, and reach the top of the pass adorned with prayer flags. The view includes Ama Dablam, Cholatse, and Lobuche East. Descend to Dzongla, with views of Cholatse, Ama Dablam, Lobuche Peak, and Pheriche village. Overnight at Lodge (B, L, D)
Day 12: Trek Gorak Shep (5170m) – Everest Base Camp (5364m) – Gorak Shep 7-8 hours trek
Continue trekking to Gorak Shep, through boulders and glaciers. The trail to Gorak Shep is rocky but offers stunning views of the Khumbu glacier. After lunch, trek towards Everest Base Camp through Gorak Shep Lake. The trail changes yearly due to glacier movements, making it strenuous due to high altitude and thin air. After reaching base camp, return to Gorak Shep. Overnight at Lodge (B, L, D)
Day 13: Trek/climb Gorakshep – Kalapatthar (5545m) – Pheriche (4250m) 7-8 hours trek
Start early for a breathtaking sunrise view from Kalapatthar (5545m), offering a panoramic view of Everest and other magnificent peaks. Descend to Gorak Shep for lunch, then continue down to Pheriche. Overnight at Lodge (B, L, D)
Day 14: Trek Pheriche – Tyangboche (3850m) 5-6 hours trek
Trek through Pangboche village to Tyangboche, home to the region’s largest monastery. Visit the trekkers’ center for exhibitions and presentations on Sherpa culture, Buddhist religion, and environmental development. Tyangboche is a great place to explore and relax. Overnight at Lodge (B, L, D)
Day 15: Trek Tyangboche – Namche Bazaar (3440m) 5-6 hours trek
Descend steeply to Phunki Tenga, crossing the Dudh Koshi. Enjoy panoramic views of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Kusum Kangaru. Ascend to Sanasa, where Sherpas sell Tibetan goods. Overnight at Lodge (B, L, D)
Day 16: Trek Namche Bazaar – Lukla (2886m) 6-7 hours trek
Our last day in the mountains, we hike from Namche Bazaar via Monjo to Lukla. The trail is mostly downhill, crossing the Bhote Koshi River several times. The final uphill climb brings us to Lukla, where we celebrate our journey with the crew, enjoying local beer and dancing to Sherpa music. Overnight at Lodge (B, L, D)
Day 17: Fly to Kathmandu and farewell dinner in the evening
Fly back to Kathmandu in the early morning, with a day free to explore. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner with traditional Nepalese cuisine and a cultural dance performance. Overnight at the hotel (B, B)
Day 18: Transfer to the airport for your onward flight home
Spend your last day shopping and packing before departure. Our team will escort you to the airport for your flight home. Meeting and serving you was a wonderful experience. (B)

This can be accomplished at the airport, at banks, or at your hotel. Please note the hotels will exchange up to about USD 100 for each transaction only. There are ATMs up to Namche Bazaar but can be unreliable. The currency exchange rate is better in Kathmandu.
