Tilicho Lake Trek Overview
The Tilicho Lake Trek reveals the breathtaking Tilicho Lake, situated at an impressive 5,200 meters. Collecting the glacial runoff from Annapurna and Thorong Peak, it proudly stands as one of the world’s highest lakes.
Our adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Syange in a private tourist vehicle, lasting between 7 to 9 hours, depending on road conditions and traffic. The trek kicks off from Syange, following the Marshyangdi River, offering stunning views of Manaslu and Himal Chuli to the east.
This incredible journey takes you through charming villages inhabited by diverse ethnic groups, each offering spectacular and majestic Himalayan vistas. The route mirrors the Annapurna Circuit, but with a thrilling twist.
Instead of heading north from Manang to Tanki Manang and Yak Kharka, the Tilicho Lake trek veers west through Khangshar Village, ultimately reaching the awe-inspiring Tilicho Lake.
We then trek to Yak Kharka, conquer the Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters, and descend to the sacred town of Muktinath, before reaching Jomsom. From Jomsom, a stunning 30-minute flight takes us to Pokhara.
Alternatively, from Tilicho Lake, adventurers have the option to cross the challenging Moesokanta La Pass to Jomsom instead of Thorong La Pass. This route requires additional equipment, including tents, for the ultimate trekking experience.

Is it necessary to hire guides/trekking agency for Tilicho Lake trekking?
While it’s not essential to hire a guide or trekking agency for the Tilicho Lake, there are compelling reasons why many trekkers opt to do so:
Enhanced Safety and Expertise: Guides bring invaluable knowledge of the terrain, weather conditions, and potential hazards. Their expertise ensures a safer journey and allows you to navigate confidently through varying landscapes.
Insight into Local Culture: Trekking with a guide enriches your experience with cultural insights and stories about the region. You’ll learn about the flora, fauna, and traditions of the diverse communities along the trail.
Convenience and Logistics: Trekking agencies handle all logistical aspects such as permits, accommodations, meals, and transportation. This streamlined approach lets you focus entirely on soaking in the breathtaking scenery and enjoying the trek.
Support in Emergencies: Guides are trained to respond to emergencies like altitude sickness or injuries promptly. Their presence provides reassurance and ensures swift assistance if any unexpected situations arise.
Shared Adventure: Joining a guided trek offers camaraderie and the opportunity to share the journey with like-minded adventurers. It adds a social dimension to your trekking experience, making memories and forging friendships along the way.
Whether you’re a seasoned trekker or new to hiking in the Himalayas, trekking with a guide or agency can elevate your Annapurna Circuit adventure, making it not just a trek, but a truly immersive and unforgettable expedition.
What kind of weather and temperature can I expect while trekking?
Trekking in the Tilicho Lake area, especially combined with Thorong La Pass, involves experiencing a range of weather conditions due to varying altitudes. Here’s a general breakdown of what you can expect:
Spring (March to May):
- Weather: Generally stable and warmer weather with clear skies.
- Temperature: At lower elevations (starting points like Besi Sahar), temperatures range from 15°C to 25°C during the day. As you ascend, temperatures decrease gradually.
- Altitude Effects: Mild to moderate altitude effects depending on individual acclimatization.
Summer/Monsoon (June to August):
- Weather: Monsoon season with frequent rainfall, especially in July and August.
- Temperature: Lower elevations can be warm (20°C to 30°C), but higher altitudes may experience cooler temperatures. Rainfall can make trails slippery and muddy.
- Altitude Effects: Risk of landslides and trails being less stable due to rain.
Autumn (September to November):
- Weather: Clear skies and stable weather, making it the best time for trekking.
- Temperature: Days are generally warm (15°C to 25°C), with colder nights at higher elevations.
- Altitude Effects: Ideal conditions for trekking and clearer mountain views.
Winter (December to February):
- Weather: Cold temperatures with occasional snowfall, especially at higher elevations.
- Temperature: Daytime temperatures can vary from 5°C to 15°C at lower elevations, but sub-zero temperatures are common at higher altitudes, particularly around Thorong La Pass.
- Altitude Effects: Harsher conditions with potential for snow-covered trails and limited facilities.
Specifically for Thorong La Pass (5,416 m) and Tilicho Lake Trek:
- Altitude: Both Thorong La Pass and Tilicho Lake are at high altitudes, so be prepared for colder temperatures than the lower regions.
- Preparation: Ensure you have appropriate clothing layers, including thermal wear and a good quality down jacket, especially for early mornings and higher altitudes.
- Acclimatization: Proper acclimatization is crucial to prevent altitude sickness. Take it slow and allow time for your body to adjust to the altitude.
Always check local weather forecasts and trekking conditions before embarking on your journey.
Is it possible to use credit cards in the places I visit during the trek?
Nepalese Rupees cash is preferred to a credit card while trekking in the mountain region. Exchanging your cash into Nepali Rupees in Kathmandu before the beginning of the trek is ideal. This can be accomplished at the airport, at banks, or at your hotel. Please note the hotels will exchange up to about USD 100 for each transaction only. There are few ATMs up to higher altitudes but can be unreliable. The currency exchange rate is better in Kathmandu.
Are your guides certified by the hotel management and tourism center? Have they undergone specific training for high-altitude conditions?
We offer licensed trekking guides fluent in English. Our guides are certified by the Hotel Management and Tourism Center following a 45-day training program. Additionally, they receive high-altitude training from the Kathmandu Environmental Education Project (KEEP).
