You will then be transferred to your hotel. After check-in, you will visit the HGT office, meet your trekking guide, and get introduced to other participants. In the evening, we will organize a welcome dinner at an excellent traditional Nepalese restaurant, where you will enjoy a cultural program along with a fine meal.

After breakfast, we start a guided tour of several historical and spiritual attractions in Kathmandu. The day will also be for finalizing official procedures and other necessary arrangements. You will also be briefed on the nature of the trek, equipment, and team composition. Some of the landmarks we visit include the World Heritage Sites of Kathmandu Durbar Square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupati Nath, the famous ‘Monkey Temple’ (Swayambhu Nath), and the Buddhist shrine Bouddha Nath. In the afternoon, there will be a pre-trip discussion where we can meet our trek leader and other team members. You can also make your last-minute purchases of personal items as you will be flying to the Himalayas tomorrow.
Day 03: Fly to Pokhara and Pokhara Sightseeing
Today we fly to Pokhara. Be sure to sit on the right side of the airplane for the best views of the Himalayas. Pokhara offers magnificent views of Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Machhapuchhare, the five peaks of the Annapurna range, and others. Pokhara is famous for its numerous lakes, which also offer boat rides. We make a sightseeing trip to some of Pokhara’s marketplaces, old bazaars, and landmarks. In the evening, explore the surrounding lakeside areas.
Day 04: Fly to Jomsom / Trek to Marpha (2.5 hrs)
We take the morning flight to Jomsom. After exploring Jomsom, we head towards Marpha. Initially, we go downhill through the valley with mountain peaks on both sides. We cross the Syang Khola, walk into the Syang Village, and continue trekking to Marpha.
Day 05: Trek around, acclimatize, and rest at Marpha
Marpha is famous as the apple capital of Nepal, where one can enjoy different items made from apples. The local apple brandy of Marpha is renowned throughout Nepal. The barren landscape of this area resembles Tibet.
Day 06: Trek to Yak Kharka (5 hrs)
Today we trek to Yak Kharka from Marpha. We will be leaving civilization behind at Marpha. Cross the thinning tree line and terraced farming. Ascend along the flank of the mountain to Yak Kharka.
Day 07: Acclimatization at Yak Kharka
Since we have gained considerable height yesterday, we take another day at Yak Kharka for proper acclimatization. Explore and hike around Yak Kharka.
Day 08: Trek to Hidden Valley (8-9 hrs)
A long day. Continue trekking to Hidden Valley. The initial path carved by the yaks gives rise to more wilderness. Cross the Thapa Pass. By now, we are already into the snowline. Continue further to arrive at Hidden Valley.
Day 09: Trek to and around Tukuche Peak Base Camp
Today we finally arrive at Tukuche Peak Base Camp. After arrival, trek around, wind up, and relax. It’s also important to acclimatize to the high altitude.
Day 10: Climbing Preparation & Hiking back to Base Camp
Today, we begin our climbing preparation. We hike toward Camp I and then return to Base Camp.
Day 11: Base Camp to Camp I and back to Base Camp
Today, we hike to Camp I. After reaching Camp I and making necessary arrangements, we return to base camp again. This step is essential for proper acclimatization.

We hike to Camp I again. But today, we stay overnight at Camp I.
Day 13: Camp I to Camp II and back to Base Camp
Another important step for proper acclimatization and training. From Camp I, we hike to Camp II. After reaching Camp II, we return to Base Camp again.
Day 14 to 20: Route Fixing / Summit Climb / Back to Base Camp
During these days, we make all necessary arrangements for the summit climb, such as route fixing. Initially, we move between Base Camp, Camp I, and Camp II. Then we hike towards the summit and return to our camp. In this way, slowly and steadily, after making all necessary arrangements, training, and acclimatization, and after considering the weather conditions, we summit Tukuche Peak. After summiting the peak, we return to Base Camp.
Day 21: Trek to Hidden Valley (2 hrs)
We clean up the mess we created at the Base Camp. Explore around if interested. Get back to Hidden Valley. Explore and relax.
Day 22: Trek to Marpha (7-8 hrs)
Tackling along the cairns, we proceed along the snowy path. After a few hours of walking in the snow, we arrive at the top of Thapa Pass. The descent from there is rather flat. By late afternoon, we arrive at Yak Kharka. From Yak Kharka, it’s a steep descent leading finally to Marpha.
Day 23: Trek to Jomsom (2 hrs)
From Marpha, we retrace our path back to Jomsom. We arrive at Jomsom by late afternoon. Because of the possibility of high wind in the afternoon, flights from Jomsom to Pokhara are flown in the morning. Therefore, we stay overnight at Jomsom to catch the early morning flight.
Day 24: Fly Jomsom-Pokhara-Kathmandu
After breakfast, we check in at the airport to fly back to Pokhara, a 30-minute dramatic flight between the gorge of the two huge mountains, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. How fit do I need to be to do this trek?
To undertake the Dhaulagiri Circuit trek, a high level of physical fitness and endurance is essential. This trek is categorized as strenuous due to its high altitudes, challenging terrain, and long trekking days. Trekkers will encounter steep ascents and descents, rocky paths, and potentially adverse weather conditions, which require strength, stamina, and resilience. Prior trekking experience in high-altitude regions is beneficial but not mandatory, as long as you are prepared for the physical demands and able to acclimatize effectively to the altitude. It’s advisable to engage in cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and hiking practice before embarking on this adventurous journey to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
During the Upper Mustang trek, you can expect to walk for an average of 5 to 7 hours per day, covering distances that range from 10 to 15 kilometers (6 to 9 miles) depending on the specific itinerary and terrain conditions. The trek involves moderate to strenuous hiking, with some days requiring longer walks due to higher altitude gains or challenging trails. It’s important to maintain a steady pace and take breaks as needed to acclimatize to the altitude and enjoy the scenic landscapes along the way.
What is the highest altitude reached in this trek?
The highest altitude reached in the Upper Mustang trek is at Lo La Pass, which stands at approximately 3,950 meters (12,959 feet) above sea level. This pass offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and marks a significant point in the trek before descending into Lo Manthang, the capital of the Upper Mustang region.
Is it necessary to hire guides/trekking agency for this trekking?
While it’s not essential to hire a guide or trekking agency for the trek, there are compelling reasons why many trekkers opt to do so:
-
Enhanced Safety and Expertise: Guides bring invaluable knowledge of the terrain, weather conditions, and potential hazards. Their expertise ensures a safer journey and allows you to navigate confidently through varying landscapes.
-
Insight into Local Culture: Trekking with a guide enriches your experience with cultural insights and stories about the region. You’ll learn about the flora, fauna, and traditions of the diverse communities along the trail.
-
Convenience and Logistics: Trekking agencies handle all logistical aspects such as permits, accommodations, meals, and transportation. This streamlined approach lets you focus entirely on soaking in the breathtaking scenery and enjoying the trek.
-
Support in Emergencies: Guides are trained to respond to emergencies like altitude sickness or injuries promptly. Their presence provides reassurance and ensures swift assistance if any unexpected situations arise.
-
Shared Adventure: Joining a guided trek offers camaraderie and the opportunity to share the journey with like-minded adventurers. It adds a social dimension to your trekking experience, making memories and forging friendships along the way.
Whether you’re a seasoned trekker or new to hiking in the Himalayas, trekking with a guide or agency can elevate your adventure, making it not just a trek, but a truly immersive and unforgettable expedition.
What kind of weather and temperature can I expect while trekking?
While trekking in the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek, you can expect varied weather conditions and temperatures due to the trek’s altitude and terrain diversity:
-
Spring (March to May):
- Weather: Generally clear skies with occasional rain showers. Spring blooms with rhododendrons and other wildflowers.
- Temperature: Temperatures range from mild to warm during the day (15°C to 25°C) and cool to cold at night (0°C to 10°C).
-
Summer (June to August):
- Weather: Monsoon season brings heavy rainfall, especially in lower elevations. Clouds can obscure mountain views.
- Temperature: Daytime temperatures can be mild to warm (15°C to 25°C), while nights are cool (5°C to 15°C).
-
Autumn (September to November):
- Weather: Clear skies and stable weather conditions. Best time for trekking with excellent visibility and moderate temperatures.
- Temperature: Daytime temperatures are pleasant (15°C to 20°C), and nights are cooler (0°C to 10°C).
-
Winter (December to February):
- Weather: Dry and cold conditions prevail, especially at higher altitudes. Clear skies but occasional snowfall.
- Temperature: Daytime temperatures range from cool to cold (5°C to 15°C), and nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing (-10°C to 5°C).
Throughout the trek, weather conditions can change rapidly, especially in the high mountain passes and valleys. It’s essential to be prepared with appropriate clothing and gear for varying temperatures and possible weather changes.
Is it possible to use credit cards in the places I visit during the trek?
Nepalese Rupees cash is preferred to a credit card while trekking in the mountain region. Exchanging your cash into Nepali Rupees in Kathmandu before the beginning of the trek is ideal. This can be accomplished at the airport, at banks, or at your hotel. Please note the hotels will exchange up to about USD 100 for each transaction only. There are few ATMs up to higher altitudes but can be unreliable. The currency exchange rate is better in Kathmandu.
Are your guides certified by the hotel management and tourism center? Have they undergone specific training for high-altitude conditions?
We offer licensed trekking guides fluent in English. Our guides are certified by the Hotel Management and Tourism Center following a 45-day training program. Additionally, they receive high-altitude training from the Kathmandu Environmental Education Project (KEEP).
