Upper Mustang Trek Highlights

Upper Mustang Trek Overview

The Upper Mustang trek offers a rare and exclusive journey into the hidden kingdom of Lo, where the fabled medieval walled city of Lo Manthang serves as its capital. This region holds rich cultural and religious heritage within Nepal. Historically, the origins of Lo Manthang are shrouded in myth and legend, and it remained an independent principality until 1951. Even today, the king of Lo Manthang holds the honorary rank of Colonel in the Nepalese Army.

Until 1992, Upper Mustang remained closed to outsiders, preserving its untouched landscapes with cave dwellings carved into cliffs and remarkable architecture. Trekking through Upper Mustang provides an authentic glimpse into the daily lives of Nepal’s mountain people, whose lifestyle bears strong resemblances to Tibet due to their geographical proximity.

While road access has influenced the trekking routes in some areas of Mustang, our itinerary is carefully crafted to balance a blend of driving and trekking. We prioritize trekking routes that minimize road interaction, ensuring you experience key attractions such as the King’s Palace, ancient monasteries, and expansive caves along the way.
